People from all walks of life in New York get caught driving while intoxicated, but, in Broome County, first-time offenders have an opportunity to avoid a criminal record. The district attorney's office has started an alternative program that involves an ankle or wrist monitor that checks defendants for alcohol consumption for 90 days. In addition to monitoring, people would receive alcohol counseling and attend victim impact panels.
Police in New York City have reported that almost nine pounds of the deadly opioid fentanyl was discovered following a vehicle stop in the in Bronx on Feb. 1. The seized drugs are said to have been enough to cause over a million overdoses and would have been worth about $10 million on the street. Police say that the seizure was the result of an investigation carried out by detectives with the New York City Police Department's Queens Narcotics Major Case Squad.

Marijuana laws in the Empire State range from light to harsh, depending on a variety of factors, including whether the offender has cannabis for personal use or distribution.
Police in Troy, New York, collaborated with the FBI to raid seven apartments and take nine people into custody during several drug raids that took place on Feb. 1. However, the result of the raids had left some people in the community less than thrilled. Instead of seizing heroin, they recovered about 6.5 pounds of marijuana and $9,000 in cash. No weapons were recovered during the raids.
