2 facing drug charges following drug trafficking bust

New York authorities took two Suffolk County residents into custody on Nov. 30 following an investigation into a drug trafficking ring. The two individuals were identified as a 25-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman.

Detectives reportedly executed a search warrant at home located in the 900 block of Easton Street in Ronkonkoma at 5:30 a.m. During the execution of the search warrant, authorities found 320 grams of cocaine, 75 grams of heroin, 130 grams of crack cocaine and 23 grams of crystal methamphetamine. In addition to the drugs, authorities recovered drug packaging paraphernalia, including scales and cutting agents. Furthermore, they found three loaded handguns, numerous rounds of ammunition and $10,000 in cash.

The two residents were taken into custody at the scene. They were both charged with three counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance. Additionally, they face charges for criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of stolen property. The accused man was also charged with conspiracy in the second degree.

Those who are convicted on charges for drug crimes could face serious legal consequences that may include a prison sentence, probation and fines. Although the severity of the punishments depends on the type and amount of drugs, anyone who is convicted on drug charges will also have the convictions go on their criminal record. This could prevent that person from finding employment and housing. If more than one person is involved in the case, the attorney may also be able to negotiate with the prosecution. Working with authorities may result in dropped charges or less severe punishments. Otherwise, the attorney may seek alternative sentencing that could include rehabilitation if there is strong evidence backing the allegations made by the authorities.
