New York pro football fans might be interested in learning that Greg Hardy, the former Dallas Cowboy and free agent who was taken into custody in Texas on Sept. 26 has been indicted on a felony possession of cocaine charge. Hardy, who was a Pro Bowler in 2013, was pulled over by law enforcement officers in a suburb of Dallas.

Law enforcement officers stated that they discovered a plastic baggie in the car that contained cocaine. Court documents indicate that Hardy told the police that he didn’t know how cocaine had ended up in his vehicle.

Police allege that the baggie contained 0.7 grams of cocaine. Under Texas law, Hardy is facing up to two years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine if he is convicted of the offense. Hardy has not played a game in the NFL since the end of the 2015 season. He was previously suspended for four games for his alleged involvement in a domestic violence incident. Hardy worked as a defensive end for both the Cowboys and the Carolina Panthers. After being convicted of the domestic violence offense following a bench trial, Hardy won an appeal and the charges were then dismissed.

People who are charged with drug crimes might need to get help from criminal defense attorneys. In cases involving vehicle searches that led to the seizure of the drug, an experienced criminal defense lawyer might review the circumstances. If the police did not have the requisite reasonable suspicion to pull the vehicle over, an attorney might file a motion to have the evidence ruled inadmissible at trial.
