New York City Criminal Defense Lawyer serving Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Bronx, and New Jersey
In more than 20 years of experience, Samuel Gregory has built an exceptional career as a state and federal criminal defense attorney. With law offices in Brooklyn, he defends people from New York and New Jersey who are either under investigation for or charged with white collar, drug related, and other felony crimes and other state and federal charges. He also engages in civil rights litigation, fighting for people who have been mistreated by government officials of agencies.
In his work as a trial lawyer, Sam has drawn the attention of media outlets from People ("Tangled Web," People, April 2, 2001) to CNN ("Burden of proof," CNN, March 21, 2001) and The New York Times (Various articles, The New York Times, September 2005). He has earned the admiration of members of the legal community on both sides of the courtroom. In cases others thought were locked up, ("Proof against murder defendant 'overwhelming,'" Staten Island Advance, November 2, 1999), Sam has won acquittals ("Double Murder Verdict: Not guilty," Staten Island Advance, November 5, 1999).
Though a fighter, Sam never loses his sense of decency, as when he reached out to the family of a victim in one particularly difficult trial ("Amy's dad moved by defense lawyer's note," New York Post, May 18, 2001). His considerable trial abilities have even won him the respect of his opponents, as this anecdote from attorney and former prosecutor Star Jones makes clear:
"Sam—unfortunately for us, but fortunately for his defendants—was the best thing Legal Aid had going at the time, and one of the strongest lawyers I've ever seen. He knew how to create doubt where none should exist. He could take a compelling piece of evidence from the prosecution and poke it so full of holes you could feel a breeze running through it. Or he could take a flimsy piece of defense testimony and lace it with enough importance the jurors would buy it. Put it this way: If you're reading this book and you're ever in trouble, Sam's wouldn't be a bad number for you to have."
—Star Jones, You Have to Stand For Something or You'll Fall For Anything. (Bantam, 1998.)
Sam Gregory began his career at the Legal Aid Society in 1984. As a result of his remarkable success there, Sam was promoted to be the major offense attorney in Brooklyn. He was among the first lawyers in New York to be certified to handle death penalty cases. For four years he handled only clients facing life sentences; in fact, after the re-instatement of the death penalty in 1995, he won the first acquittal in New York City in a first degree murder case.
In addition to his work as a Brooklyn criminal defense lawyer, Sam is a law professor at St. John’s University and a regular lecturer at Brooklyn Law School and the New York Law School. He has also been invited to speak at the Brooklyn Criminal Bar Association and the Kings County District Attorney's Office.
